When the gas pressure drops in winter, the humble water heating rod (immersion rod) becomes the most useful appliance in the house. Here is what they cost, how long they take, and how to use one safely.
Water heating rod prices (2026)
| Rod | Power | Approx. price |
|---|---|---|
| Mini rod (tea / milk) | 300 – 500 W | Rs 250 – 450 |
| Standard rod | 1,000 – 1,500 W | Rs 350 – 700 |
| F8-type "shockproof" rod | 2,000 W | Rs 500 – 1,200 |
| F10 rod | 3,000 W | Rs 1,200 – 1,800 |
How long does it take?
For a normal bucket, roughly 25–40 minutes with a 1,000 W rod, 20–30 with 1,500 W and 15–25 with 2,000 W. Colder water and bigger buckets take longer. A 2,000 W rod uses 2 units an hour — about 0.5–0.7 units per bucket.
The 5 safety rules
- Plastic bucket only — never metal.
- Rod in first, then plug in. The coil must be under water, between the marks.
- Hands off — never touch the water or bucket while it is plugged in.
- Unplug first, then take out.
- Never leave it alone, and keep children away.
Which rod to buy
- For most families: the NSG F8 2,000 W rod — faster, with overheat protection.
- For weak wiring or UPS: the 1,000–1,500 W rod.
- Use an earthed wall socket.
Is "shockproof" really shockproof?
No rod makes it safe to touch the water while plugged in. "Shockproof" usually means a sealed head; it does not replace the safety rules above.
