Halogen & Sun Heaters
Halogen heaters — better known as sun heaters or dish heaters — warm you in seconds with a glowing element and a shiny reflector, for only 300–1,000 W. Choose a classic 300/600 W table heater, a bigger 900 W dish, or a tall oscillating stand heater for the whole sofa.
Halogen & Sun Heaters: how to choose the right one
In short
- A sun heater is a halogen or carbon element in front of a polished dish. It heats people and objects directly, like sunshine — not the air.
- That is why it feels warm within seconds and why it is so cheap to run: 0.3 units an hour on low, 0.6 on high.
- Best for warmth within 1–2 metres — at a sofa, bed, desk or shop counter. It will not heat a big room evenly.
- Table models cost Rs 1,000–2,500, stand heaters with oscillation Rs 2,500–10,000.
- If the element stops glowing, you can usually replace the rod instead of buying a new heater.
Why the sun heater is Pakistan's favourite winter heater
Walk into almost any Pakistani home in December and you will see a round, glowing sun heater pointed at the sofa. It has earned that place: it is cheap to buy, cheap to run, silent, light enough to carry, and it gives you that instant "standing in the sun" feeling the moment it switches on.
The trick is understanding what it does. A sun heater uses infrared heat — it warms whatever it is pointed at. Sit in front of it and you are warm; walk to the other side of the room and you feel nothing. For one or two people sitting together, that is perfect and very efficient. For a whole bedroom at night, a fan heater or oil radiator is better.
Today there are more choices than the classic white dish: bigger 600/900 W dishes, 17-inch oscillating stand heaters that turn to cover the whole sofa, apple-shaped mini heaters for kids' rooms and wall-bracket heaters that stay off the floor.

Sun heater buying checklist
- Wattage: 300/600 W for one or two people; 900–1,000 W for a group or a cold room.
- Dish size: 12-inch is standard; 16–17-inch spreads the warmth wider.
- Oscillation: worth it if more than two people sit together.
- Stand or table: a stand puts the heat at sofa and bed height.
- Overheat protection: look for it on the spec list.
- Spare rod: cheap to keep for mid-winter.
How to get the most from a sun heater
- Aim itPoint the dish at your body, not at the ceiling or the wall.
- Sit close (but not too close)About 1–1.5 metres away is the sweet spot.
- Start lowUse 300 W once you feel warm; switch to high only when needed.
- Close the doorEven a spot heater feels better in a draught-free room.
- Keep the dish cleanDust on the reflector reduces the heat — wipe it when cold.
- Keep every heater at least 1 metre from curtains, bedding, sofas and clothes — never dry clothes on a heater.
- Plug heaters straight into a wall socket. Cheap multi-plugs and long extension boards can overheat and melt.
- Stand it on a flat, hard floor so the tip-over switch works; never on a bed, sofa or thick carpet.
- Switch it off when you sleep or leave the room, and keep children and pets away from hot grills.
- Not for bathrooms or wet areas.
