Quartz & Rod Room Heaters: how to choose the right one
In short
- A quartz (rod) heater has 2–3 glowing quartz tubes behind a grill. Like a sun heater, it warms people in front of it within seconds.
- Most models have 400 W and 800 W settings; bigger ones go to 1,200 W.
- A tip-over switch underneath means it only works standing on a flat floor — if it will not start, that is usually why.
- No-brand 400/800 W heaters cost Rs 900–1,800; Sogo Rs 2,500–4,000; E-lite Rs 4,500–6,500.
- If a rod breaks, a replacement tube costs a few hundred rupees.
The best budget heater for a desk, bed or small room
The rod heater is the most-sold heater in Pakistan for a reason: for around a thousand rupees you get instant warmth that you can carry from room to room. It is ideal for one or two people — at a study desk, beside a bed, behind a shop counter.
It works the same way as a sun heater — infrared warmth that heats you, not the air — but in a flat box shape with a carry handle and a foldable stand. One rod on is gentle and UPS-friendly; both rods on is noticeably warmer.
For a whole bedroom at night, pair it with a fan heater, or choose an oil radiator.

If your rod heater will not turn on
- Check the floorPlace it on a flat, hard floor — the tip-over switch underneath must be pressed.
- Check the knobTurn to 1 or 2 and wait a few seconds.
- Check the socketTry another wall socket.
- Look at the rodsIf one rod is dark, it may need replacing.

Safety first
- Keep every heater at least 1 metre from curtains, bedding, sofas and clothes — never dry clothes on a heater.
- Plug heaters straight into a wall socket. Cheap multi-plugs and long extension boards can overheat and melt.
- Stand it on a flat, hard floor so the tip-over switch works; never on a bed, sofa or thick carpet.
- Switch it off when you sleep or leave the room, and keep children and pets away from hot grills.
