The sun heater — also called a halogen heater or dish heater — is Pakistan's most popular winter heater. It is cheap to buy, cheap to run and warms you within seconds. This guide explains how it works, what it costs, and which model suits your room.

How a sun heater works
A carbon or halogen element glows in front of a polished, curved dish. The dish reflects infrared heat forward — the same kind of warmth you feel from sunshine. It heats your skin and clothes directly instead of heating the air, which is why you feel warm in seconds and why it uses so little power. The flip side: it only warms what it faces, within about 1–2 metres.
Electricity use
A 600 W sun heater uses 0.6 units an hour on high and 0.3 units on low. Compared with a 2,000 W fan heater, that is less than a third of the power — which is why so many families use a sun heater in the lounge. See heater electricity use.
Can it run on solar?
On the 300 W setting, many solar and inverter setups can run a sun heater during the day. The apple heater and ARSIM sun heater are popular for this. Check your inverter's spare capacity first — more in heater on solar or UPS.
How to choose
- One or two people: a 300/600 W table heater such as the Feidiao.
- Colder room or 2–3 people: the 600/900 W dish heater.
- Whole sofa: an oscillating stand heater like the 2-in-1 stand heater.
- Children at home or no floor space: the wall-bracket heater.
Safety tips
- Sit about 1–1.5 metres away and do not stare into the element.
- Keep it 1 metre from curtains and clothes; never dry clothes on it.
- Use a wall socket and a flat floor.
- Switch it off when you leave the room.
