If your sun heater switches on but the element stays dark, the heater is usually fine — only the carbon rod has burnt out. Replacing it takes about ten minutes and costs a fraction of a new heater.
First, check it really is the rod
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Power light on, rod dark | Burnt-out rod | Replace the rod |
| Nothing at all | Socket, plug, fuse or switch | Try another socket; see an electrician |
| Rod cracked or broken | Knock or moved while hot | Replace the rod |
| Rod glows, then cuts out | Overheat protection working | Clear space around it, clean the dish |
How to replace it
- Unplug the heater and let it cool completely.
- Remove the front grill — usually a few screws or clips.
- Note how the old rod is connected (take a photo).
- Unclip the old rod and loosen its two terminals.
- Fit the new rod the same way and tighten the terminals.
- Refit the grill, stand it on a flat floor and test.
Safety
- Never work on a heater that is plugged in.
- Match the shape, length and fittings of the old rod.
- If wires look burnt or loose, take it to an electrician.
- Never run a heater without its grill.
