How an oil heater works
Electric elements heat a special oil sealed inside the fins. The hot fins warm the air around them, which rises and circulates gently around the room. Because the oil holds heat, the radiator keeps warming the room after the thermostat switches the elements off. The oil never needs refilling.
Is it expensive to run?
An oil radiator draws 2,000–2,500 W while its elements are on — 2 to 2.5 units an hour. In a closed room with the thermostat set, the elements cycle off for long periods, so real use is lower. It is not a low-watt heater, but it is an efficient way to keep a bedroom steadily warm. See heater electricity use.
How many fins?
- 7 fins: small rooms up to about 100 sq ft.
- 9–11 fins: normal bedrooms, 100–200 sq ft — e.g. Geepas 11-fin.
- 13 fins: large rooms and lounges — e.g. Gree GEH22 or Black+Decker OR013FD.
Who should buy one?
- Families who want a heater on for long evenings in a bedroom.
- Elderly parents who feel the cold and dislike fan noise.
- Homes with small children (no glowing element — but the fins get hot).
- Anyone moving away from gas heaters for safety.
Safety
Stand it upright and wait 10 minutes after moving it before switching on. Keep it 1 metre from curtains and bedding, never dry clothes on it, and plug it into its own wall socket.
